beauty and madness

"perfection is not just about control. it is also about letting go." 

i saw the trailer of black swan from a cousin's page last october 2010 and in that instant i knew that it will be a movie that would be well worth of my time and money. by early december 2010, the movie gathered enough buzz for it to be a shoo-in for the incoming acting awards season hence my curiosity about it upped a notch. by january 2011, i was able to get a soft copy format but i painstakingly backed off from viewing it. it took a lot of willpower to do just that even if i keep seeing favorable comments about it from several movie rating websites and friends' networking pages. there is something inherently amazing seeing something via the big screen -  the view is so much clearer, the audio is so much sharper. all the little details stack up to give moviegoers a rockin' good time.

good thing my patience paid off.

black swan is a movie worthy to be seen on the big screen and i'm really glad i did. it was revolting, it was scandalous, it was more often offensive to the senses, as with aronofky's other opus, but the the layer after layer of madness and darkness made it such an arrestingly beautiful movie. one moment, it ushers you to the highest possible high you could ever be and then it lets you freefall into your lowest low. at times it was sexy and then it becomes creepy. the movie throws a lot of hard punches, surprising you here and there, hitting you where it hurts and then leaves you no room to breathe and take it all in. transcedence - it is what the movie speaks a lot of. and so, after the crescendo came the grand finale to this twisted little piece of visual artistry. ultimately, redemption and freedom, the very things that the protagonist sought for, were found and celebrated, albeit in a slightly offbeat way. 

walking out of the movie house is much like swallowing a bitter pill, that instead of making me feel better, all the more that it made me feel so messed up and sick. good thing that the effect is not going to last and will only be just for a couple hours. tops.
