we've heard them growl for the past five years, but today saw an end to the reign of the UST Growling Tigers over the UAAP Cheerdance competition.
it was a jampacked Araneta Center that bore witness to the unlucky rally of USTE for the sixth win and the hard-fought and well-deserved win of THE school in Diliman - UP.
for so long, we, the iskolars ng bayan, have wanted, hungered even, to snatch that very elusive title, and many times, we have been humbled. wanting would not suffice - there's got to be more than that to get to the place that we want to be in - right at the very top.
i may not have seen the lengths that the people comprising the UP pep squad had gone through, but i know that they poured their hearts and souls to be able to give the performance that deserved nothing less than a victory.
the spotless execution of stunts, the flawless maneuvering on the floor, the careful articulation of the whole routine - these were the necessary ingredients to an excellent performance.
with only six minutes into the routine, UP wowed the crowd, as usual, with their innovative take on floor dances - their real strength. then, off they did their pyramids and tosses, concentrating more on stability and security, rather than going for the height, but all the while injecting their own brand of flair to pull off a show-stopping, goose-bump inducing performance that brought the house down.
keeping the competition at bay was not an easy feat especially when all have turned in as hungry as UP did. all eyes were watching every breath, every movement, every careful, well-crafted plans of each of the eight schools turn into action, waiting with bated breath for the concluding moments of the day's event.
in the end, the solid performance of UP brought them through. victory was sweet.
